Types of Apraxia
Apraxia of speech has two different types: acquired apraxia and childhood apraxia.
Acquired apraxia can happen to anyone at any age, but it usually appears in adults. When it happens, one’s speech capacity is compromised completely.
Meanwhile, childhood apraxia of speech is often acquired from birth and is considered a motor speech disorder. When a child has this type of apraxia, the child is unable to speak or make any sound. However, they will be able to understand the speech spoken to them better. Fortunately, childhood apraxia of speech can be treated in kids if they get the right treatment.
Causes of Apraxia
Experts are still uncertain as to how childhood apraxia of speech occurs. Some believe it is caused by signal problems between the brain and the muscles involved in helping a person speak. Researchers are still trying to understand how everything is related. Others are also checking genetic causes, which may have caused childhood apraxia.
Meanwhile, acquired apraxia is caused by brain damage in the areas which control the body’s capacity to speak. Some conditions that can cause apraxia include head injury, stroke, and brain tumors.
Symptoms of Apraxia
Apraxia has many speech-related symptoms that can be identified. Some of them include:
1. Difficulty in creating and connecting syllables to create words
2. No to minimal babbling during infancy
3. Difficulty in saying complex words
4. Always repeating pronunciation
5. Inconsistencies in saying certain sounds or words
6. Incorrect inflections on certain words and sounds
7. Uses nonverbal cues often than verbal cues
8. Vowel sounds are often distorted for some words
9. Some consonants are said silently, especially at the beginning and end of the word
10. Some tend to struggle in saying or making words
For children with childhood apraxia, it happens alongside other speech and language problems. As a result, here are some of the symptoms your child may show if they have apraxia:
1. Limited vocabulary
2. Grammatical issues
3. Coordination and fine motor skill problems
4. Problems chewing and swallowing
If you or your loved one has this problem, we can diagnose them correctly here at Neurorehab & Speech Healers, LLC. We will also be able to identify the symptoms correctly and identify the right speech disorder because apraxia of speech is often confused with aphasia.
Testing and Treatment for Apraxia
There is no clear test or procedure that can help speech pathologists identify if a young patient has childhood apraxia. Several tests are done to determine this, and usually, it is through the help of the symptoms of the patient. Usually, these tests are done after a child’s second birthday because children who are too young won’t be able to do the tests properly to determine if they have apraxia.
Meanwhile, acquired apraxia is diagnosed the same way by determining the symptoms experienced by the patient. Some may also be required to take an MRI to see how severe the brain damage is and its location.
As far as treatment is concerned, there are many available methods for patients to use. However, their effectiveness varies depending on the person in question, and those with childhood apraxia of speech may be required to take on the treatment for it to be cured.
Here at Neurorehab & Speech Healers, LLC, you can be reassured that our Neptune-based licensed speech pathologists can diagnose your situation correctly and provide the right treatment that works for you.
