Jackson Dysphagia Speech Therapy

speech pathologySwallowing is an important part of our eating routine because it allows us to move the food and drinks we have from our mouth to our stomach without problems. However, there are cases where some people find it hard to swallow because of the pain that comes along with it. For these people, they may be experiencing dysphagia.

Dysphagia is a condition that disables people from being able to swallow food and water because their muscles won’t allow them to or if there is pain that comes with swallowing. While there are times that people may have difficulty swallowing, such as on times when we eat too fast or don’t chew the food properly, those with dysphagia will require treatment to get past this complication.

Causes and Symptoms of Dysphagia

Jackson Dysphagia Speech Therapy medical speech pathology segment block 300x199Dysphagia can happen at any age, but it is usually experienced by older adults. The causes do vary per person, but it can be caused by one of the following categories:

1. Esophageal dysphagia – it is a sensation where the person feels like the food is stuck or hung up in their throat or chest after swallowing.

2. Oropharyngeal dysphagia – this occurs when one’s throat muscles are weaker than before, causing difficulties in swallowing. When this happens, you may either gag, cough, or choke when you try swallowing. Sometimes, it may even cause you to feel as if something is stuck in your nose and may cause pneumonia.

Aging and certain neurological conditions can also cause dysphagia. However, some cases do not usually occur all the time and cannot be considered caused by dysphagia.

To know if one has dysphagia, they may experience the following symptoms:

1. Painful swallowing or odynophagia
2. Unable to swallow at all
3. Persisting sensation that food is stuck in your chest, throat, or breastbone
4. Drooling
5. Hoarse speaking
6. Regurgitate food
7. Frequent heartburn
8. Sudden weight loss
9. Coughing and gagging during swallowing
10. Food has to be cut down or avoided because of swallowing problems.

If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, it is important to go to the doctor immediately.
